Diploma - Dental Assistant
Dental Assistants are trained in chairside assisting,
four-handed dentistry, radiology, and the use
of dental materials. In addition, they manage
financial records, complete insurance forms, and
schedule patients. Upon completion of the Dental
Assistant program, graduates are eligible to take
the Radiology Licensure Examination of Ohio to
become a Dental X-ray Machine Operator. These
students may also sit for the Ohio Dental Association
Certification Examination upon graduation and
for the General Chairside Examination given by
the Dental Assisting National Board after two
years of full-time work experience and after having
qualified for CPR Certification.

The dental chair side assistant
works directly with the dentist and the patient. She/he
is skilled in the preparation and use of basic instrument
setups as well as in the proper manipulation of dental
instruments and materials. She/he can expose,
process and mount dental x-ray film, clean and sterilize
instruments and instruct the patient in proper oral
health care. Her/his expertise in the operation
and maintenance of dental equipment is essential in
the modern dental office. The primary goal of the dental
assistant is to provide the patient with competent dental
care. To accomplish this, she/he must be proficient
in four-handed dentistry, knowledgeable in preventive
dentistry and confident as a member of the dental health
care team.
This program will develop the skills necessary to secure
an entry-level position as a chair side assistant or
receptionist in a dental office. A graduate would also

Vatterott College:
This program is designed to give students the
skills needed to meet the employment needs of the modern
dental office and will prepare the graduate with theory
and working knowledge of dental assisting. Graduates
from this program will obtain the skills to acquire
entry-level employment as a dental assistant. All graduates
of the Dental Assistant program are eligible for registry
with the American Medical Technologist (AMT) as a Registered
Dental Assistant after passing the AMT examination for
dental assistants. The program consists of 40 weeks,
66 quarter credit hours, and is offered in the day program
only. Each term is 10 weeks in length. Each 10-week
phase is equal to 18 quarter credit hours and the externship
phase is equal to 12 quarter credit hours. Students
attend class from 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Monday through
Thursday during the first 10 weeks. During the first
and second ten week phase the student will shadow in
area dental offices during times to be specified. In
Phase four, during specified weeks, the students will
participate in full-time externships in area dental
offices for a total of 256 hours. During the last week,
students will be in the classroom for finals and RDA
testing. Throughout the course students will take field
trips and also be exposed to a series of guest speakers.
Students must satisfactorily complete 256 hours of externship
as well as meet the requirements of graduation in order
to receive a diploma.
